The UNP is a party which formulated a programme to improve the future of the child generation by investing heavily on education. It introduced free education and later President J.R. Jayewardene provided free uniforms and text books to schoolchildren while former President Ranasinghe Premadasa provided a meal and a glass of milk to schoolchildren. Later, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and he joined hands to introduce a free insurance scheme for the benefit of schoolchildren Power, Energy and Enterprise Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake said.
He was addressing a meeting at the Bloemendhal Sinhala Vidyalaya to mark the distribution of a stock of exercise books and educational equipment among a group of nearly 1,000 students belonging to low income families in the area.
Minister Karunanayake said they had now added tabs and computers to the list of benefits granted to school children. He would request students to make maximum use of the facilities provided to them without undervaluing them.
