President calls for quick solution to Gohagoda waste mountain

President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed relevant parties to provide immediate solutions to the garbage mountain at Gohagoda in Katugastota.

This is the main environmental issue in the Kandy city. “Immediate steps must be taken to avoid another pathetic incident such as Meethotamulla,” said the President.

The President gave these instructions to officials at a meeting held at the President’s Office on Thursday, regarding streamlining the activities of Gohagoda Solid Waste Management Centre.

Residents have alleged that several issues have emerged regarding waste collected in Gohagoda in Katugasthota in various provisional councils including the Kandy Municipal Council.

The President instructed that waste be methodically cleaned through a proper recycling process without inconveniencing the people. He said provincial councils should take steps in collaborating with the Urban Councils. The President also instructed the Central Environmental Authority to provide assistance in this regard.

Officials including the Chief Secretary of the Central Province participated in the meeting.
