Commuters frown upon non-display of bus fares

Commuters are inconvenienced due to the lack of bus fare revision display boards inside private and SLTB buses.

Since commuters are unaware of their bus fares, conductors are known to levy erroneous fees.

A spokesperson for the National Transport Commission (NTC) said they have received complaints from passengers against private bus crews for charging high fares, not giving their balance money, not issuing tickets and non-display of fare tables in buses.

He said all long distance private buses under the NTC have been issued with bus fare revision notice boards and they must be displayed on the board in front of the bus. The Flying Squad would be deployed round the clock to monitor and bring bus crews who do not display bus fares to task,” he added.

However, the Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) President Gemunu Wijeratne said Provincial Road Passenger Transport Authorities have not properly issued bus fare revision display boards to be pasted in their private buses.

"We expect to convene a meeting with them in the future to sort out this problem,” he added.

Passengers who are compelled to pay high ticket prices are advised to call NTC Hotline 1955 to lodge complaints.
