Southern people showed their brotherhood to the Northern people by bringing relief goods to flood victims of the North, Speaker Karu Jayasuriya said.

He said brotherhood is valuable than the physical things that they donated to the affected people.

Speaker Jayasuriya stated so, during a personal visit to the flood affected Kilinochchi and Mullaitivu districts in order to look into the progress of the relief activities on Thursday (03).

At meetings held at the Kilinochchi and the Mullaitivu District Secretariats, the Speaker had discussions in length with several MPs and District Secretaries regarding the disaster situation and relief services.

He also reminisced about his childhood when the Northern People supported the flood affected people in the South.

The support extended by the Sri Lanka Army in relief services, paved the way for a strong relationship between the Northern people and the Army, he said. He also appreciated the President, Prime Minister and the Disaster Management Minister for their active involvement. The Speaker was also thankful to the Army and public servants for taking immediate steps to purify the drinking water sources in the North, despite requests from foreign countries to support that. “It is my dream that the next generation too would dedicate themselves for their motherland without any division.”

The Northern politicians appreciated the personal visit of the Speaker. According to TNA MP S. Sridaran, Jayasuriya was the first ever Speaker to look into relief activities for the Northern disaster victims.
