Government mooting to stifle media - SLPP

Parliamentarian Shehan Semasinghe accused the Government of taking action to pass Acts to control and supress the media.

Addressing the media yesterday along with MP Sanath Nishantha representing the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, Semasinghe said the Premier had called certain media as “Black Media”.

“Wickremesinghe said the Government would take measures to change the Black Media.Without controlling media the Government cannot move forward. As a first step in the Government’s move to control media, steps have been taken to ban advertising in certain selected media,” he added.

He said MPs who represent the government are levelling allegations against each other as they can’t share the portfolios and the UNP is in a dilemma now," Semasinghe added.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) has become the main supporter of the Government by now.

“People say that the TNA has become a cat’s paw of the UNP. But it is obvious that the UNP has become the pat’s paw of the TNA,” he said.

He said they will not allow the UNP and the TNA to pass the proposed Constitution in Parliament.

MP Sanath Nishantha said the SLPP will surcharge anyone misusing the Opposition Leader’s Office. He said misusing public funds is a non-bailable offence. “The cost of misusing the Opposition Leader’s office will be calculated and measures will be taken to surcharge the cost from those misusing it,” he said.
