Sri Lanka Air Force Sports Club are likely to have their wings clipped and taste defeat on Sunday against the unbeaten Kandy Sports Club, in the first second round game. These sides faced off in the first leg of an entertaining encounter finished in a Kandy SC win 28-14 at Ratmalana. Rugby is a sports that sets itself apart through its strict focus and hence to a set of core values. Integrity, passion, solidarity, discipline and respect are the defining character-building characteristics of the game which is greatly followed by Kandy SC. These are known as the rugby values and are incorporated within the Rugby Playing Charter. Kandy SC as the defending champions should have things to their own liking. Kandy had an excellent training week under the guidance of rugby chairman Lasantha Wijesuriya. They are lucky to have access to a wider group of healthy players for selection. They have shown in the first round that they are an excellent side with a heavy pack. They are marshalled very well by their experienced half backs, and have an excellent coaching team. Bottom of the league Air Force SC XV faces a tough assignment.
Thanushi and Akila do well at TT
Thanushi Rodrigo of Mahamaya Girls College won the girls event and Kingswood College’s Akila Rajasinghe the boys event at the inaugural Central Province junior TT tournament organised by Gampola TT Academy and Royal College Kurunduwatta TT Parents Association at the Jayatilaka indoor stadium Nawalapitiya.
Thanushi beat her home town school rival Waruni Ishara of Gothami BMV. A total of 45 schools from Kandy, Matale and Nuwara Eliya were in action. The Cadet's event went in favor of Kingswood College when they beat arch rivals Dharmaraja College. In the Girls event Mahamaya Girls College beat home town Hillwood College.
Football academy
In Kandy an academy to impart the correct fundamentals of football training to children in Kandy from grassroots/beginner stage to a high performance level between the ages of 5 to 16 years was inaugurated. This academy hopes to produce promising footballers in a fun and friendly environment with a healthy mix of qualified coaches. This Academy is a player development program which focuses on individual player needs and looks to impart the right kind of technical skills and tactical acumen.
Inaugural Mahela-Sanga trophy lands in Kandy
Trinity College won the inaugural Mahela-Sanga trophy when they beat Nalanda College in their schools cricket match played last weekend. Trinity scored 165 in their first innings and Nalanda replied with 136.
Trinity in their second innings made 145 and Nalanda 127 to lose by 47 runs . This was the 41st encounter between the two schools.
The 1988 Nalanda College group came forward along with Old Boys Association and Nalanda College Past Cricketers Association to make arrangements to play the game for a trophy in the names of Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara.
Rugby coaches course in the dark
A level II rugby course was conducted at Nittawela grounds on 29 and 30 December, where 17 were in attendance.
There were coaches and players of the central region, with lectures given by Nihal Viper Gunaratne and Ananda Kasthuriachchi.
The attendance was good but the organizing part was found wanting.
Normally this type of seminars are held for group or team of players, e.g. club youth coach, club coach, teacher, representative coach, talent development coach.
The organizers should at least in the next occasion try and rectify that.
Ten-a-side rugby
A 10-a-side rugby tournament is to be organised by Kandy Youth Sports Club, where eight teams are expected to take part. Tens rugby is popular and played like in sevens where there is more space available than in 15-a-side rugby. There are two extra forwards and one added back. The game uses the same Laws as the 15-a-side game but with some slight variations. The tournament is expected to be played at the Police grounds, where the first rugby game in Kandy was played.
Trinity overall runners up in football
Trinity College football under 18 and under 20 footballers made Kandy proud by being adjudged as the overall runners-up in the invitation football tournament held in Bangalore. In this tournament Trinitians who were on a football tour for the first time gave their best against some top teams.
Kandy SC 2nd round fixtures
The second round fixtures of Kandy Sports Club in the Dialog rugby league is as follows: January 6th vs Air Force SC at (Nittawela 4 pm), 13th vs Army SC (Nittawela 4pm), 19th vs Police SC (Police Park 4pm), 26th vs Navy SC (Nittawela 4 pm), February 2nd vs CH & FC (Race Course 6.30pm), 9th vs CR & FC (Longden Place 4pm), 16th vs Havelock SC (Havelock Park 6.30pm). The second round will go on for seven straight weeks. The super round will kick off from 23rd February and will conclude on 3rd March with the Cup and Plate finals.
Rajans Cricket Foundation AGM
The annual general meeting of the Dharmaraja College Cricket Foundation will be held today December 5th at the O.B.U. Headquarters.
Arshad Jamaldeen meets with an accident
Arshad Jamaldeen former Royalist and Kandy Sports Club's fly half has been advised by the doctors to keep out of rugby for a few months after he was knocked down by a three wheeler while riding a motor bike at Katugastota. He may miss the second round matches of the Dialog league.
Hockey fiesta
A six a side hockey tournament will be organized by the Old Vidyartha College hockey club called the Kandy hockey fiesta which will be played on 2 February at the provincial council grounds Pallekelle. This is for under 40, over 40 and 50 men and for women under 30 and over 30. Some of the top Kandy products are expected to play.
Kandy could reign in sports with another ground
Sports is so popular in Kandy that today there is a necessity for another ground, especially for sports like football, hockey and cricket.
Today these sports are finding it difficult to play their matches due to high ground charges and bad conditions. Following the lack of suitable grounds for cricket, hockey and football, the standards of these sports at club level have been limited.
Nugawela to play girls rugby
Out of 12 schools who have shown interest to play in girls inter school rugby, Nugawela Central from the Kandy District is one of them.
The tournament is expected to be kicked off in the coming month.
Sean in Canada, Taylor in Sri Lanka
Kandy SC’s coach Sean Wijesinghe who is migrating to Canada is out of the country and will be back in a few days time to give a hand for the second round games.
In his absence Johan Taylor the former coach is in Kandy. This South African-born ruggerite helped Kandy SC rugby to win many a trophy with his expert coaching. His presence will give a big boost for Kandy SC.
KDCA to bring cricket back
Kandy District Cricket Association are all out to bring cricket back to its good old days. Last year they tried their best but the weather prevented them from doing so.
This time they are hoping to make a good start and give club cricket its due place.
Sportsmen ‘Kandy Faa’ badly ill
Famous sportsman Kandy Faa, known as A. Farook who gives a big hand from the touch line at every rugby game for Kandy SC and Kandy schools is not in good health. A well known figure in the rugby circles he is expected to go on “Umra” in a few days time. Farook, is a product of Vidyartha College, where he excelled in rugby, boxing, hockey and athletics and was later in the Kandy SC squad in the mid 1970’s.
Maurice remembered
Maurice Perera who was a rugby legend in Kandy, played only for Kandy SC was remembered on his birthday on 1st of January. In memory of this legend some of his friends organized a religious ceremony. Maurice was a great ruggerite and administrator of Kandy Sports Club. He was born on 1st January 1934 and passed away on February 2013.
