Relief for Janasaviya employees who lost jobs

Labour, Trade Union Relations and Social Empowerment Minister Daya Gamage said he would make a dedicated effort to provide proper relief to Human Resources Development officers of the Janasaviya Trust Fund who lost employment due to political victimisation.

He gave this assurance when he met representatives of the Displaced Human Resources Development Officers’ National Organisation for discussion at his Ministry on January 2. A total of 1,540 Human Development Officers were recruited to the Janasaviya Trust Fund which was started in 1991 and 405 of them who lost their jobs joined the national organisation.

They lost employment when the Janasaviya movement was transformed as the Samurdhi Movement by the government which assumed office in 1994.

He said he would consider the possibility of re-employing those development officers who wished to resume their jobs and provide a low interest loan of Rs. 500,000 to others who wished to launch a self employment scheme. Similarly, he would intervene to pay compensation to those who wanted some compensation for loss of employment. A Cabinet paper would be submitted in this connection, within the next two weeks, he added.
