Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga vested two rehabilitated small-scale rural tanks in the Attanagalla Divisional Secretariat area with the farmer community on Sunday.

These two tanks which were in dilapidated condition for over five decades were rehabilitated under the Wew dahasak – gam dahasak programme of the unity government.

Speaking at the event, former President Kumaratunga said that this programme’s primary focus was on small-scale village tanks targetting the development of traditional agriculture.

“It is sad that due to the 52-day crisis and uncertainty, almost all the development work of the country came to a standstill. Now the whole imbroglio has been resolved, enabling the government to resume its development work,” she said.

With the renovation of these two tanks at Heendeniya and Ranpokunagama, over 100 acres of paddy lands which had been abandoned for years can be cultivated.

Attanagalla United National Party chief organiser Chandrasoma Sarnalal, Agriculture Development Officer C. Wickramarachchi, and PS members Yamuna Ranjani Samatugha, Anurada Gunathilake and Thushan Priyanga were also present.
