Remembering the invaluable services rendered to society by senior citizens in the country has become a significant annual event of HelpAge Sri Lanka (HASL). Accordingly, a special religious ceremony and a Bodhi pooja was conducted by HelpAge at the Parama Dharmawardanarama temple in Rattanapitiya, to invoke blessings on senior citizens for the New Year.

Religious observances were carried out by Chief Incumbent Ven. Raththota Seelawansa Thera at the invitation of HelpAge Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge. Over 200 elders and HelpAge staffers attended the event.

Delivering the anusasana, Ven. Seelawansa Thera commended the services rendered by HelpAge during the past 33 years for the benefit of underprivileged senior citizens; providing free cataract surgeries, as well as conducting mobile medical camps island-wide.

The ven. thera also thanked HelpAge for providing senior citizens with expensive equipment for disabilities; such as wheelchairs, crutches, and hearing aids; free of charge and wished them luck to continue their projects smoothly in the years to come.

Making a brief speech, HelpAge Executive Director Samantha Liyanawaduge said a HelpAge Eye Hospital at Wellawatta conducts 20 free cataract surgeries everyday and had completed over 34,000 free such surgeries so far. According to Eye Hospital Manager Ajitha De Alwis, a large number of elderly cataract patients visit the hospital on a daily basis.
