‘Shilpa Sena’ programme to be introduced

The Science, Technology and Research Ministry has taken measures to implement a new programme called ‘Shilpa Sena’ to promote science and technology to enhance its contribution to the economic growth of the country, Non-Cabinet Science, Technology and Research Minister Sujeewa Senasinghe said.

Addressing the media at Sirikotha yesterday, Minister Senasinghe said that he is planning to seek private sector assistance to improve the country’s Science and Technology sector with the intention of increasing its contribution to more than 5 percent of Sri Lanka’s Gross Domestic Production (GDP).

The Minister stressed the importance of encouraging researchers to do more productive researches paying special attention on country’s requirements.

“We are also planning to coordinate both researchers and the private sector to find out available market opportunities for new innovations,” the Minister said.

According to the minister, only 0.01 percent of the country’s budegetary allocations is made for research and most of these researches are done only as an education qualification.

Responding to a question by a journalist, Minister Senasinghe predicted that the next election would be the Presidential Election and the United National Party is planning to nominate its own candidate for the next Presidential Election.

“We would be able form a Cabinet of Ministers in 2020, which is similar to the Cabinet formed during the period of late President J.R.Jayewardene.
