120th birth commemoration of former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike

The 120th birth commemoration of former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike held at his statue at Galle Face Green today under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena.

The President placed floral tributes to the statue with the conclusion of religious rites. Relatives of the Bandaranaike family and Parliamentarians representing the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and the United People’s Freedom Alliance participated in this ceremony.

Solomon West Ridgeway Dias Bandaranaike founded the Sri Lanka Freedom Party bringing the Sangha, Vedha, Guru, Govi  Kamkaru forces together. The SLFP led Mahajana Eksath Peramuna came to power by winning the 1956 General election.

The S.W.R.D. Bandaranike Government freed the people from the grip of the colonials by nationalizing many government services such as transport.
The former Prime Minister was assassinated at his private residence Tintagel at Rosmead place on September 25, 1959, while meeting the public.
