CAA raids bring Rs 5.7 mn in fines

The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) earned over Rs 5.7 million through fines in islandwide raids conducted during the festive season from December 1 to December 31 last year.

A CAA Spokesman told the Daily News that the authority received several complaints during the festive season regarding errant traders. The CAA team conducted 2,254 countrywide raids during the New Year season following these complaints.

He emphasised that legal action was taken against 1,265 traders who did not comply with regulation during this period.

Meanwhile, the CAA had conducted 21 raids from December 30 to January 5. The Authority had collected fines amounting to Rs.189,500 during this period.

"We conducted raids to nab errant traders on the instructions of Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister,” he said.

'Several consumer items including rice, dhal, potatoes and big onions unsuitable for human consumption were also confiscated," he added
