Compensation for dependents of two fishermen

The dependants of the two fishermen who died when their boat collided with a ship in mid sea received insurance payments as compensation from Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development State Minister Dilip Wedaarachchi at a ceremony at the Ministry auditorium yesterday. Each dependent family received Rs 1.2 million at this ceremony. The two fishermen who lost their lives were A.A.Amila Pushpakumara and M. Danushka Madushanka who set out to sea from Kalutara.

The compensation payments were made under the Samudra Shakthi Insurance scheme. They had subscribed to the Insurance scheme on 11.09.2018 and the tragedy occurred the very next day on 12.09.2018.

Speaking on the occasion the Deputy Minister described the Samudra Shakthi Insurance scheme as a victory achieved by all fishermen.

He said he was instrumental in launching this scheme for the benefit of fishermen who struggle between life and death in midseas to make a living. He said he would request those families benefiting from This scheme to use the money for the benefit of their children.

Director General of the Department of Fisheries Ginige Prasanna Janaka Kumara, other Ministry officials and representatives of the National Fisheries Congress were also present on the occasion.
