New Deputy Chief Sanghanayake Thera for Kurunegala

Ven. Prof. Alahenegama Sumanaratana Thera has been appointed as the Deputy Chief Sanghanayake Thera of Kurunegala district with the honorary title Dharmakeerthi Sri Devamitta Piyaratana, by the Karaka Maha Sangha Sabha of the Malawatu Maha Vihara Chapter of the Shyamopali Maha Nikaya, led by its Mahanayake Thera.

Ven. Sumanaratana Thera is the Dean of the Faculty of Languages and Cultural Education of the Anuradhapura Sri Lanka Bhikkhu University and Viharadhipati of the Kobeigane Meegaswewa Jayanthi Piyaratanaramaya, Lulugashena Sri Abhinawaramaya and Ganegama Meegaswewa Viharaya.

Born on October 17, 1952, in Alahenegama, Kurunegala, he was ordained as a samanera bhikkhu at the Meegaswewa Jayanthi Piyaratanaramaya on June 27, 1968, under the preceptorship of Viharadhipati Ven. Wepathange Sri Piyaratana Nayake Thera.

After his initial education at the Alahenegama Government School, he received higher ordination at the Malwatte Viharaya in Kandy under the tutelage of Ven. Wepathange Piyaratne Thera. From 1969, he was educated at the Kobeigane Sri Saddharmodaya Pirivena under the guidance of Aggamuwe Siriratanalankara and Geta Diwulwewe Siri Hemaloka Theras, who functioned as Parivenadhipathis.

From 1973, he studied for the Pracheena under the guidance of Ven. Welamitiyawe Sri Kusaladhamma Nayaka Thera, Ven. Welamitiyawe Sri Dhammarakkitha Nayaka Thera and Ven. Ittepane Dhammalankara Mahanayaka Thera and the patronage of Vidyalankara Parivenadhipati, late Yakkaduwe Sri Pannarama Nayaka Thera.

He entered Peradeniya University on October 17, 1977 and obtained a BA honours degree. In 2000, he obtained a PhD from Peradeniya University. After obtaining his initial degree, Ven. Sumanaratana Thera was appointed Parivenadhipati of the Weerahena Vidyaratne Maha Pirivena in 1982.

Ven. Sumanaratana Thera is also a serving member of the World Buddhist Congress.

He has been appointed Deputy Chief Sanghanayake Thera of the Kurunegala district by the Malwatte Karaka Maha Sangha Sabha in recognition of his immense religious and social service. A Prasada Pooja was held in this connection at the Kandy Malwatte Maha Viharaya on December 25, 2018.

A felicitation ceremony in his honour was held at the Kobeigane Meegaswewa Jayanthi Piyaratanaramaya on December 28, attended by a distinguished gathering.
