Rs. 50 mn in relief for farmers

The government has taken measures to provide relief to farmers for crop damage caused by the Sena caterpillar (fall army worm).

The Agriculture Ministry has allocated Rs. 50 million to provide compensation for the damage caused by this pest, Agriculture Minister P. Harrison said.

The maize and sugar cane cultivation in Anuradhapura, Ampara and Monaragala has been badly damaged by due to the caterpillar infestation.

Minister Harrison undertook an inspection tour of the Nachchaduwa area in Anuradhapura last Saturday to observe the infestation and evaluate the damage to crops.

The Agriculture Ministry has already introduced several methods to control the spread of fall army worm, including the introduction of four types of chemicals, moth traps and drone technology, the Minister said.
