The Government Analyst's Department and Lanka Electricity Board officials have initiated a special investigation to find out the cause for the fire which erupted in a four storey building in Yatinuwara street, Kandy on Tuesday morning.
A 36 year old father, Kamanathan Ramarajah had thrown his two sons, daughter and his wife from a window of the four storey building to escape the blazing flames onto a bed sheet held by neighbours.
They escaped with minor injuries.The ground below was laden with large mattresses placed by fire fighters and area residents.
Visuals relating to the ordeal were shown in media and websites.The gutted building had computer accessories, garments and household equipment.
A saloon and a jewellery shop on the third floor was destroyed by the blazing fire.
Members of the injured family were admitted to the Kandy Teaching Hospital and are out of danger.
Kandy Police said the cause of the fire has not been identified by police.
