Action to combat narcotics slipping in through sea

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development State Minister Dilp Wedaarachchi has planned a national programme to obtain the contribution of the fishing community towards the President’s national programme to combat narcotic drugs by gaining its assistance to prevent the infiltration of hard drugs to the country through sea lanes.

State Minister Wedaarachchi said he hoped to conduct this operation through the network of fishery harbours and ferries in the country.

As soon as officials were approved to the top echelons of the Fishery Harbour Corporation, he hoped to appoint port management committees to handle fishery harbour development and operate the anti-narcotics drive by providing the assistance of the fishery community to the Police, STF, Navy and the Coast Guard to prevent smuggling of narcotics by sea into the country.
