Archaeological Department officials had unearthed a stupa at the Meewalapathaha-Weheragalayaya Purana Temple in the Galewela Divisional Secretariat Area recently. The temple ground sprawls over 25 acres and many other historic architectures in the Anuradhapura era are said to have buried here.

The officials recently unearthed the stupa and a few other ancient parts including a pinnacle called Upagala.

Chief Incumbent of the temple Ven.Dabawa Gunananda Nayaka Thera had arrived at the vihara that was covered with shrubs three decades ago. “I saw the ruins that were scattered in the area and treasure hunters had ruined many of them,” the Thera said.

The Thera had informed the department many a time about the deplorable situation of the temple. Later, several officials visited the site and unearthed the stupa. The Thera said that many other architects may be under the soil. If the department could unearth them, the history of Sri Lanka would change, the Thera said.
