Drought affected in Anuradhapura seek relief

The drought destroyed 130,000 hectares of paddy fields cultivated for the Maha 2018/19 in Anuradhapura and about 120,000 farmer families suffered untold hardships for two years since they did not receive dry food ration worth Rs. 5000 granted for a drought affected family.

They have complained to Anuradhapura Government Agent R.M. Wanninayake that although the government promised to grant this relief until the drought is over, it has been suspended now.

‘’The drought is no more now. But it hit farmers in their thousands and they got nothing and are now waiting till March-April harvest.

They do not have livelihoods now. Therefore, they should be granted relief until 2018/19 Maha season harvest,” they said.
