Competing for Cleopatra

Lady Gaga has been winning applause and awards for her turn as Ally in Bradley Cooper’s version of ‘A Star is Born’.

Now it seems she has another huge role in her sights. A report from The Daily Star has stated that an insider at Sony, who are developing a big-budget biopic on Eqyptian Queen Cleopatra, is now looking at Gaga potentially playing the legendary ruler in the new film.

Oscar-winner Angelina Jolie was previously the favourite to take the part, but could Gaga be about to win the role?

The source spoke on the state of negotiations and who is in the running.

“Cleopatra was known as the Queen of the Nile, and Elizabeth Taylor firmly established herself as Hollywood’s queen in the 1963 film version. There’s every reason to think that whoever gets to play her this time round is going to enjoy an equally lofty perch in the motion picture industry.”They explained that the race between Gaga and Angelina was so tight that “both of them will have to audition - a pretty rare ask of an A-list star”.

The 1963 film Cleopatra almost bankrupted its studio 20th Century Fox, with actress Elizabeth Taylor also taking a then record salary for the role: $1 million.

The production on the film also saw Taylor begin an affair with co-star Richard Burton, beginning a dramatic on-off relationship.

The new film is billed by the source at Sony as a “dirty, bloody political thriller told from a feminist perspective”.

Cleopatra ruled from 51 BC to 30BC before she was deposed by Octavian Caesar (later Emperor Augustus). She was also famous for her love affairs with Roman dictator Julius Caesar and Roman general Mark Antony.
