Man held over murder of friend’s mother

Anamaduwa Police arrested a man who had allegedly murdered the mother of his best friend to plunder her gold necklace and wedding ring, last Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as M. M. Gnanawathie, 67, of Andigama.

The suspect, 37, is a father of three. The other suspect who had assisted in the crime is a 20-year-old unmarried man. They had tied the hands and legs of the woman and grabbed the gold necklace worth Rs. 150,000 and her gold wedding ring on her finger.

Police found the suspects while they were hiding in a house at Ratmalana to evade arrest.

They had pawned the gold necklace for Rs. 54,000.

The woman had died due to suffocation with the ribbon tied around her neck.

Anamaduwa Police are investigating.
