‘Budget should increase public sector salaries’

The government should give a salary increase to public servants in the upcoming Budget without violating the National Salaries Policy, Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge said.

Speaking at a press conference at the GMOA headquarters in Colombo yesterday afternoon, he said that a national policy on allowances should be formulated through the Budget. Increasing basic salaries of selected categories through Cabinet papers should be stopped immediately and permanently.

The pension of public servants abolished from the 2016 Budget should be brought back in the 2019 Budget. Pension is essential to maintain the quality of the public service, while offering good service to the people.

The current tax policy which discourages all professionals to stay in the country and serve their motherland should be changed in the Budget, Dr. Aluthge said.

He said vehicle permits offered to public servants should be re-established. A national action plan should be formulated to control non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cancer and diabetes which have reached very high levels.

The GMOA presented several other proposals aimed at the advancement of the health and medical sectors.
