Internal Affairs, Home Affairs and Provincial Councils and Local Government State Minister J.C. Alawathuwala said that the e-identity cards and e-passports would be introduced to the public, this year.
Accordingly, all Divisional Secretariats are expected issue e-identity cards, while every District Secretariat would issue e-passports with guidance from the Internal Affairs Ministry.
With this, there would be no need for people living in rural parts of the country to come to Colombo to obtain their passports and National Identity Cards (NICs) in future, the state minister said.
It is expected that these arrangements to issue e-passports and e-NICs would be commenced countrywide by June, this year, he added.
"There are about 332 divisional secretariats in the country and of them, 185 divisional secretaries are issuing original birth certificates and death certificates to the public within minutes, State Minister Alawathuwala told the Daily News, yesterday.
