Teacher sentenced, fined for student assault

The teacher who was in remand custody in connection with the assault of a Grade 11 student of Sir John Kotelawala school, Kurunegala was sentenced to two years RI and fined Rs.10,000 by Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara yesterday.

In addition to this, the judge ordered that Rs.100,000 be paid as compensation to the student. In default of the fine and compensation, the sentence will be extended for another six months.

The accused Ramya De Silva of Sir John Kotelawala school, Kuruengala was indicted by the Attorney General for the alleged assault of Grade 11 student Emiya Mudiyanselage Chatura Sri Lal Bandara on September 4, 2012.

 State Council Charaka Dharmasiri told court that the teacher assaulted student while he was playing with his friend in the school ground.

The victim had been admitted to the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital. According to the reports of Dr.N.C.P.Chaminda that the student had sustained serious injuries. The case had been proceeding for nearly six years.

State Counsel Charaka Dharmasiri prosecuted while Attorney Sanjeewa Vijepala appeared for the defence.
