Finance Minister to meet former Customs DG

Trade Union action continues for sixth day

A decisive discussion will be held between Finance and Mass Media Minister Mangala Samaraweera and former Customs Director General P.M.S. Charles at the Finance Ministry premises today.

According to a Treasury Spokesman, the discussion will be based on the recent problematic situation with regard to the appointment of new head to the Sri Lanka Customs.

However, the Trade Union action was launched by the Customs Trade Union Alliance on last Wednesday (January 30) in protest over the decision to remove the former Director General of Sri Lanka Customs P.S.M. Charles and the appointment of a retired Navy officer to the position.

A Spokesman further said that former Customs Director General will be recruited to the post in the Finance Ministry aiming to gain her maximum contribution and expertise for the uplift of the Ministry. Clearance of cargo has dropped by 90 percent as the work to rule campaign launched by the Customs Trade Unions continued for the sixth day.

Customs officials launched a trade union action against the transfer of Director General of Sri Lanka Customs P.S.M. Charles and replacing her with a retired Naval officer.

Meanwhile, the Importers Association of Essential Commodities yesterday announced that all wholesale and retail traders of essential commodities in Pettah would launch a hartal in Pettah today demanding that the government to solve this issue soon.

Customs officials said that Customs is presently clearing only essential commodities such as potatoes, onions and medicines as a result of this work to rule campaign.
