Suspended sentence for homicide suspect

A suspect who had pleaded guilty to homicide charges was sentenced to one years’ rigorous imprisonment (RI) suspended for 10 yeas and fined Rs.10,000 by Kurunegala High Court Judge Menaka Wijesundara, yesterday morning.

In addition to this, the judge also ordered the accused to pay Rs.100,000 as compensation to the family of the deceased. The suspect would be sentenced to an additional six months in prison in default of the fine.

The suspect, a resident of Alawwa, was indicted by the Attorney-General. He was arrested for the murder of H.P. Ariyathilake on April 12, 2016. Ariyathilake’s body was found hacked with an axe.

State Counsel Charaka Dhamsiri told court that the accused and the deceased, who were friends, had gone to visit another friend on the day of the incident.

An argument had later arisen over a cigarette, while they were consuming liquor.

Attorney-at-Law Sirisena Palliyaguru appeared on behalf of the defence.
