Army tip-off leads cops to find felled trees

Army officers of the Security Force Headquarters - East recently tipped off the Police about a large-scale illicit tree-felling racket in the Mirandavil, Wadumune, Welikanda and Nelugala Forest Reserves, enabling the Valachchenai Police to seize a large stock of logs worth millions of rupees.

On information given by Welikanda villagers to the SFHQ-E, a team of Army officers entered the forest reserves and kept the jungle area under surveillance, but the tree fellers had by then fled the areas, leaving the valuable felled logs, like teak, palu, and margosa behind in both Mirandavil and Nelugala Forest Reserves.

The value of those felled trees exceeds Rs. 80 lakhs, according to the SFHQ-E.

Eastern Commander Major General Aruna Jayasekara has commended the officers for taking the initiative in this regard.
