Sri Lanka to exploit lagoon ecotourism

The Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry in collaboration with the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry has taken measures to implement a project to promote lagoon-related ecotourism.

A meeting to discuss this project was held on Tuesday at the Fisheries Ministry under the patronage of State Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dilip Wedaarachchi.

The main intention of promoting lagoon-related ecotourism is to ensure the social and economic development of the fisheries community while protecting the lagoon ecosystems, the State Minister said.

“Though Sri Lanka is surrounded by the deep blue waters of the Indian Ocean, the country has used only nine percent of this resource thus far. If we get the maximum benefit of this resource, there is no need of anything else to develop the country,” he said.
