Energy-efficient smokeless hearth developed

A new firewood-saving hearth has been developed by a businessman in Ibbagamuwa.

M. M. Sisira Senaratne of Periyakadunelawa in Ibbagamuwa developed this hearth simply by fixing an Air Processing Unit (APU) to save energy.

He said it is so efficient that it only needed two small pieces of firewood to cook rice and curry. He added that it is nearly one third of the firewood used in a traditional hearth in an ordinary household. “The APU consumes little electricity,” Senaratne said. “The hearth does not emit smoke. So it can cook a curry in less than five minutes since it heats up faster than a traditional hearth.”

He said cooking with this hearth is easier compared to the traditional one since it does not require much effort to light it.

“It is eco-friendly as environmental pollution is minimal and it consumes less firewood.”

He requests the assistance of Housing Minister Sajith Premadasa to fix such a hearth in the newly constructed model houses and Uda Gammana. He added that the product is in great demand from households in Ibbagamuwa and Kurunegala.
