Mystery pest causing panic in Ambalantota

Fifty acres of paddy fields are under threat in Ambalantota as a result of the spread of an unidentified pest.

About 40 farmers are left high and dry as a result. The paddy lands were on the verge of harvesting when the pests spread among the paddy fields, the farmers said.

They added that the situation has been brought to the notice of relevant authorities who observe silence.

Meanwhile, Dikwella MOH Dr. Indika Senanayake warns the people to be vigilant of dengue in their areas with the identification of several dengue patients.

He advised people to keep their home gardens, churches, temples, and state institutions clean to avoid the spread of dengue.

The MOH said about 25 dengue patients were identified within the last 22 days. Most patients were reported from Nilwella and Dodamphala.

Children in nine schools were educated and anti-dengue programmes were launched in Dikwella, Yonakapura, Nilwella, Thennahena, and Belikatuwella.

A dengue outbreak is also likely in Kudawella fisheries harbour area, health authorities said. They said abandoned fishing craft, clogged drains, uncovered pits and garbage piles are dengue mosquitoes breeding places. Health authorities said owners have been noticed to remove abandoned fishing craft repeatedly but they still remain in the premises.
