China’s Silk Route development programme, built on the ‘One Belt, One Road’ Initiative and Sri Lanka’s development programme, has certain similarities. Hence, the two countries can work in cooperation, safeguarding their separate identities, Chinese Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan said.

He expressed these sentiments when he called on the Malwatte and Asgiriya prelates at their respective temples in Kandy and received their blessings on February 6. Ambassador Cheng Xueyuan said China was always ready to assist Sri Lanka in its development efforts, and that it never intended to interfere in the internal affairs of Sri Lanka, including political issues.

The Ambassador said it was only the people in Sri Lanka themselves who could resolve the crisis in the political field of the country; since the fate of any country depended on the decisions of its own people.

He said the 62nd anniversary of Sri Lanka - China diplomatic relations fell on February 7, this year and both countries worked with understanding to further-strengthen these ties. The Ambassador also visited the Sri Dalada Maligawa and paid homage to the Sacred Tooth relic.
