Nine sentenced to death for 2001 murder

Nine suspects who were convicted for a murder that took place in 2001 was sentenced to death by the Chilaw High Court Judge Evon Fernando on Friday.

Those suspects had been indicted by the Attorney General for murdering Mahalekamge Lionel Fernando (27) using swords and knives on June 24, 2001 during an unlawful assembly in the Marawila area.

The deceased, who had been importing Japanese automobile parts for business had been killed after being threatened for ransom by the convicts.

The charges levelled against the accused were proved beyond reasonable doubt and were convicted to death.

President’s Counsels Anil De Silva, U.R. De Silva and Attorneys Tharanga Dissanayake and Nadee Sarathchandra appeared on behalf of the defendants and Senior State Counsel Akila Dalpadadu appeared on behalf of the complainants representing the Attorney General.

Siblings of a same family are also among the convicts.

This is the first time in the history where the Chialw High Courts sentenced the highest number of convicts to death within a day for the same case.
