Exorbitant prices of goods at Sri Pada

Pilgrims to Sri Pada are facing inconveniences as traders along Nallathanni – Sri Pada road sell goods including food at high rates in their temporary stalls.

Traders of sweet meat, spices etc. targeting pilgrims sell them at higher rates than in the ordinary market.

The devotees said the prepaid mobile phone cards of all service providers are sold at a price Rs. 5 to Rs. 20 higher than its original price. Traders do not even exhibit the prices of items.

Charging excessively from devotees has been the practice in the area for years.

The Consumer Services Authority Nuwara Eliya branch informed traders not to sell goods at high prices at the Sri Pada coordinating committee meeting held under the patronage of Nuwara Eliya District Secretary.

Yet, traders do not heed the warning. Devotees said the Consumer Services Authority should take steps to stop this.
