Forum calls on President to stop harassment of war heroes

The Executive Committee of the Global Sri Lankan Forum has requested President Maithripala Sirisena to “intervene and call a halt to the hunting down of war heroes concurrent to the UN Human Rights Commission sessions in March 2019 to please the separatist Tamil diaspora and anti-patriotic politicians.”

The Forum in a letter addressed to the President said, according to reports, steps were being allegedly taken to sacrifice 11 Naval officers on behalf of this petty objective.

This is intended to prepare the groundwork to establish the war crimes charges levelled against Sri Lankan war heroes by the UNHRC proposal submitted in 2015, co-sponsored by Sri Lanka.

To establish these charges, evidence and confessions from within the forces themselves were needed regarding torture and disappearances.

Such initial evidence has already been built up through officers who were caught for offences previously and released on bail and it has become a tool to hunt down war heroes who ought to be legally protected, allowing real criminals to escape from the law.

This had caused grief among Sri Lankan citizens and Sri Lankans domiciled abroad, the letter stated.
