Criminal Investigations Department (CID) sleuths yesterday revealed that the two businessmen abducted in Rathgama have been killed and their bodies burnt by pouring diesel at a forest reserve in Pallekanda, Walasmulla.
According to CID sources, these businessmen have been killed in an abandoned house in Akmeemana and the bodies were burnt at a forest reserve in Pallekanda.
CID investigators yesterday found the place in the forest reserve where these bodies were burnt. Policemen attached to the Southern Province Special Investigation Unit had remained in the forest reserve for more than three hours until these bodies were reduced to ash.
The CID team found human hair and bones from the site and police headquarters announced that 15 officials attached to this unit have been transferred with immediate effect.
IP Kapila Nishantha now in remand custody, is allegedly have committed the murder with the support of seven other cops including a Sub Inspector. A CID team arrested the Sub Inspector in question on February 21. He is a resident of Mathugama.
This Sub Inspector has confessed that IP Kapila Nishantha had received information that these businessmen were in possession of a firearm and they were abducted to find this firearm. He has told the CID that IP Kapila Nishantha had been the Crimes OIC of the Akmeemana Police for several months and he had thorough knowledge of the terrain. These two businessmen had been taken to an abandoned house in Gonamulla, Akmeemana by IP Nishantha and a police team and questioned them about firearms.
A senior CID official said the Unit’s OIC, IP Saman Rohana may not have been involved in this incident.Investigations conducted by the department so far have confirmed that he is not involved in this incident through a telephone conversation analysis and other evidence.
However, CID investigations into this are continuing and investigators are now looking at as to whether he has tried to cover up a crime.
