Govt to complete Rs 1.5 bn Habarana grid by February

The construction of Ceylon Electricity Board’s New Habarana Grid Substation, which is expected to enhance reliability of power supply network, will be completed by February 2020.

Power Energy and Business Development Mnister Ravi Karunanayake said so in Habarana during a construction inspection tour of the substation’s project site.The Habarana Grid Substation is installed to strengthen the transmission capacity of the power supply network by constructing a 220 kilowatt transmission line between between Habarana and Veyangoda.

The station will be subsidiary to proposed 200 megawatt coal-fired power plant to be set up in Sampur. Habarana Substation is constructed centered on Sampur coal-fired plant with a development loan facilitated by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).

DIMO Lanka is the project’s contractor for the Habarana substation.The project’s cost at completion will be about Rs 3.5 billion. It is being constructed on a 16 acre government land.

Minister Karunanayake said he will have seen the completion of a Rs 1.5 billion project in 2020. “Just as much it will pave the way to enhance the quality of life of the local communities, it offers multiple opportunities for investments,” he said.

“Sri Lanka’s future depends on projects such as this. This is what I call development bloom in silence,” he added.
