Case postponed for March 18

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Damith Thotawatte postponed the Wadduwa Police torture case for March 18 when Defence Counsel Sisira Kodikara informed the Judge that he had not received necessary documents for defence on March 1.

The Attorney General had filed indictments against former Wadduwa Police Officer-in-Charge, Inspector Hapuarachchige Nimal Karunarathne and four other policemen Athuluduraarchchige Felix Sepala, V. Lionel Abeysiri , G. K. Sarath Kumara and D. M. Sarath Senarathana who served at the Wadduwa Police in 2012. All accused appeared before the Court on March 1.

They were indicted by the Attorney General for torturing a suspect named Dassanayakalage Nimal Chandrasiri, a fisherman of Thalpitiya, Wadduwa, who was taken into custody by the Wadduwa Police on April 15, 2012, for possessing two cannabis cigars.

The accused were indicted under the Torture Act read with the Ceylon Criminal Code Act.

State Counsel Indika Nilumin represented the Attorney General.
