‘A celebration of unity within diversity’

Maha Shivarathri is celebrated by Hindus across the globe with great enthusiasm, to venerate Lord Shiva with the hope of spiritual freedom attained through wisdom.

Lord Shiva is the symbol of nature, according to Hindus and His veneration is among their most important rituals. The Hindus consider Shivaratri as the night when Lord Shiva performed the Tandava Nritya - the dance of primordial creation, preservation and destruction. The devotees often fast on that night, offer night-long prayers and sing verses and hymns in praise of the Lord.

The night, celebrated with lights and decorations with the hope of receiving blessings, reflects the light of unity within the cultural, religious and ethnic diversity of Sri Lanka.

It is with immense pleasure that I convey my best wishes to everyone following Hinduism, for blissful celebrations and peace achieved through spiritual wellbeing.

Ranil Wickremesinghe
Prime Minister
