Power mafia acting against national interest - Minister

Megapolis and Western Development Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka stressed the need of acting against the business and political mafia running the power sector in the country.

He said this had been an issue for a long time. “I have stated my opinion on this issue to the Cabinet of ministers also. Academics should act against this,” he said.

Ranawaka responding to a question by a journalist during a media session held in Colombo said politicians with repressive opinions, businessmen and the media are out to weaken those who act against the power mafia by defaming their character.

“Everyone knows that it was me, who acted to curb fraud and the corruption in the power sector. I had steered the Ceylon Electricity Board towards success every time the government and the Finance Ministry supported me.”

He said during his tenure as Power and Energy Minister in 2015, he could make the board a profit-earning body through a proper plan. “We earned a Rs. 20 billion profit at that time while some people were predicting that it would be a loss of Rs. 30 to 40 billion”, he added.
