Cop, forest officer held

A constable attached to the southern province special investigations unit and a forest officer were arrested following the murder of two businessmen in Rathgama, Boossa.

The police constable is one of the five who had not reported for duty. He had arrived at the Criminal Investigation Department and made a statement on Saturday. CID officers have taken him into custody at that moment.

Following his statement CID officers have found three mobile phones with the assistance of Navy divers after searching a reservoir near the lagoon and bridge on the side of the Aluth Beliatta road. Two of the three phones belonged to the two murdered businessmen.The police constable has been detained for 48 hours after being produced before the Galle magistrate’s court on Saturday itself.

The forest officer, who has allegedly helped the main suspect Inspector Nisantha of the double murder, has been taken into custody by the CID officers at his residence yesterday.

The suspect is Kankanamlage Mashel Thushara Nalinda (39) of Dikwella Uragamuwa Denagama Hena area. The suspect had helped police officers to burn the two bodies of the murdered businessmen. He is in charge of the forest section of the Kanumuldeniya forest reserve in Walasmulla. The forest officer will be produced before the Galle magistrate today.
