Chainsaw registration

Deadline extended to March 15

The Defence Ministry said the deadline for registration of chainsaw machines has been extended till March 15.

Accordingly, all chainsaw machines owned by state, and semi-government, as well as private-sector institutions and individuals should be produced at the nearest police station before March 15 to obtain registration permits.

The registration is being carried out according to a decision taken by the Defence Ministry on the orders of President Maithripala Sirisena, and began on February 20.

The registration was initially to end on February 28.

The new deadline will not be extended any further, the Ministry said in a statement.

This measure was taken to control deforestation caused by illegal felling of trees using chainsaw machines, and so regulate the felling of trees.

At registration, a special licence with a number will be issued for identification purposes. Necessary instructions have been issued to all police stations in the country.
