President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday said that he expects as the subject Minister, the Sri Lanka Police Department to enforce law and order in a free and fair manner by all citizens.
The President added that he has never telephoned any Police station in the country regarding persons involved in illegal activities throughout his political career.
He said that Police personnel should render a people-friendly service while taking stern action against the law breakers and those involved in illegal activities. President Sirisena was addressing senior Police officers on the future activities and challenges of Police Department at the Presidential Secretariat.
“Police officers should be committed to full filling their tasks for the country and the people in a proper and effective manner,” the President said.
The President while focusing on the improvement of physical resources of the department said a scientific mechanism needs to be introduced to reduce the number of complaints received by Police stations daily. He added that the Police department should seek the assistance from the experts for the development of this mechanism. The President also discussed the possibility of developing this mechanism through short, medium and long term programmes.
The President said developed countries focus on making the necessary social changes to prevent the people from illegal activities rather than increasing the number of Police stations and prisons.
Discussions also focused on recruitment, transfers and welfare activities of the department. He said that decisions with regard to the establishment of new Police stations should be taken through a Committee in future.
The President added that the department should take into account a number of factors including population in the area, number of complaints and other reasons when establishing a new Police station.
The President inquired from Police officials concerned about the progress on the recruitment of Tamil speaking officers to the police stations in the North and the East.
They also discussed the training activities of Police officers including the training against cyber crime. He instructed the officials to expedite the construction of Police Training School in the Northern Province.
The President focused on building separate wards dedicated to the Police officers in key hospitals away from Colombo.
He enlightened the Police officers on their responsibilities in enforcing the polythene ban in the country. Senior Police officers were also urged to put in place a mechanism to end the extortion ring among long distance buses after taking into reports received to him.
The President promised that the problems faced by junior Police officers would be solved step by step.
He valued the services of the Police department in eradiating the drug menace and criminal activities. IGP Pujith Jayasundera and senior Police officials were present.
