A committee, appointed by Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Wajira Abeywardana, will look into the possibility of forming a separate Urban Council for Sainthamarthu.

This was discussed at a meeting between Kalmunai Municipal Council's Sainthamarthu Independent Group 9 Municipal Members, Sainthamarthu Colombo Forum Members and Minister Abeywardana at his residence, recently.

Sainthamarthu has over 27,000 people with 16,000 voters, mostly located on the coastal belt of the Eastern Province in Kalmuani.

The people and mosque trustees as well as nine Municipal Council members from the Independent Group in Kalmunai have been demanding for a separate Urban Council for Sainthamarthu from 1988.

Minister Abeywardana appointed a sub-committee to look into this matter and report to the minister.

A committee, let by the Ministry Secretary, Ampara District parliamentarian from the SLMC A.L. Nazeer, ACMC Dr. M. Ismail and Ampara District Local Government Commissioner, was appointed.

The minister also appointed one member from the Sainthamarthu People’s Representative.
