State Minister of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Dilip Wedaarachchi said plans are underway to implement a project to produce fuel from plastics, polythene and discarded fishing nets.
He was addressing a meeting at Kudawella, recently.
He said the project will be implemented close to the fisheries harbours in the country.
He added that fishermen engaging in deep-sea fishing, discard plastic bottles, polythenes and old fishing nets in large quantities to the sea, polluting it in alarming proportions. He said with the implementation of this project, they can bring back such discarded items and hand them over to the fisheries harbours to produce fuel.
The minister said the services of SENORA and other relevant ministries would be obtained to make this project a success.
The State Minister added that the allegations against the government from certain quarters were hypocritical.
“There is also an allegation that heroic soldiers are given step-motherly treatment by the government which is baseless,” he said, debunking speculations that the economy was collapsing.
