The Army is a place where heroes are born, and this is the time that the country requires heroes, said Deputy Chief of Staff and Colonel of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR ) Major General Ajith Kariyakarawana on Sunday.

He was addressing a ceremony held at the VIR in Kurunegala on Sunday to commemorate 3,037 VIR War Heroes. Heroes cannot be delivered by giving an order or by force. It happens automatically with their bravery and commitment, said the Deputy Chief of Staff and the Colonel of VIR.

He said the VIR has a proud history of 29 years and the Regiment was named Vijayabahu by its founder and first Commanding Officer Major General Jaliya Nammuni on March 22, 1990. This was to pay tribute to ancient King Vijayabahu I.

“The brave sons of the VIR have given their today for the future for all citizens of mother Lanka. Their services for the protection of sovereignty and territorial integrity will record in the annals of our history,” he said.

“We should always remember that they have sacrificed their lives with great dignity and bravery. They released their last breath so that mother Lanka could breathe with freedom.”

“Also, the brave soldiers and officers of the VIR contributed immensely to eliminate LTTE leader Prabakaran. So our soldiers and officers are a noble lot,” he added.

The ceremony was also attended by Major General Chandana Gunawardena, Center Commandant of the Vijayabahu Regiment Brigadier Srinath Ariyasinghe, Deputy Center Commandant Colonel Nalin Bandaranayake, Director of the Recruitment of the Army Volunteer Force Colonel Keerthi Wijeratne and over 3,000 other participants who were family members of fallen War Heroes.
