Finland’s Fortum Oy to invest $ 300 mn in energy plant

Fortum Oy of Finland, a company in to generating renewable energy through recycled waste and garbage will invest USD 300 million to set up a plant in Mirigama.

The company plans to build a waste park in a 30-acre land which aims to generate 250 MW electricity which can be supplied to the national grid. The top officials of the company also met President Maithripala Sirisena last week to explain the advantages of this project.

Chairman of Endevour Energy Company, Kumar Perumal said that the Park would be set up in four months. “Sri Lanka is one of the worst affected countries in the whole of Asia where collection of garbage is concerned. The Plant would then purchase 3,500 tons of solid waste from Colombo, and will later extend the program to the Western Province and other key cities generating large volumes of garbage. ”

Two officials of the company, Juha Finnila and Waltteri Kyrola along with Endeavour Energy Corporation Ltd (Part of Fortum Oy) Chairman, Kumar Perumal, at a meeting with President Sirisena.

The trio was here to finalize work program turn ‘waste into energy’ and produce solar power by investing USD 300 million. They plan to build a ‘Waste Park’ in plot of land covering 30 acres in Mirigama and that would become the largest EPZ , in the whole of Asia generating 250 MW electricity. They have designed the project is such a way to ensure of generating this amount of power with waste being recycled.

This Endeavour Energy Company came out with its proposal, with novelty in July 2017, to end the gigantic problem of mounding waste – the disposal of garbage by turning that into much needed energy.

Chairman of Endevour Energy Company Perumal, expressing his confidence in the ability of the Fortum Oy of Finland he represents, along with his own, said , the Company intends to set up a plant with 10 MW capacity with the expertise to convert garbage to energy, and if everything goes well, the Company would within six months, the plant would be able to generate energy using Colombo City Garbage amounting to 2,400 MT and at the same time ensure 3,500 tons of solid waste generating on daily basis within the Western Province.
