A man, who had promised to donate a kidney to a patient, had fled after taking Rs. 125,000 from the latter.
S. H. Kumuduni, 39, of Siripura, Uragaha said she had to spend over Rs. 50,000 for the routine tests of the 'donor' before operation.
The suspect, from Kiripedda in Karandeniya, had volunteered to donate his kidney, following a notice appearing in the newspaper. Kumuduni said the suspect had gone for tests on 47 occasions to the hospital and she had paid him Rs. 2,000 on each occasion. She had paid him another Rs. 30,000 when he said that he wanted to admit his daughter to a school.
She said the suspect donor went missing thereafter. She made a complaint at Karandeniya Police and investigations are continuing. However, she said she has found another donor and is spending money for the tests again.
She said she had to spend Rs. 5,000 weekly for the dialysis. She added that her family is facing economic difficulties. They had to pawn their land and the motorcycle to treat her.
