‘Sri Lanka almost rid of Rubella’

Rubella has almost been eliminated from Sri Lanka, and the disease will be completely eliminated in the next few years, Health Services Director General Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

Thalassaemia screening in the country is now carried out successfully. Every single child living in affected areas in the country needs to be screened. The screening harvest is low and it is a good sign, Dr. Jasinghe said, during a seminar in Colombo recently.

He said Sri Lanka is gradually obtaining the knowledge and relevant facilities for secondary prevention of birth defects. Sri Lanka’s infant mortality rate is low.

The knowledge and facilities for tertiary prevention of birth defects in children is low in Sri Lanka, and this area needs to be developed. Congenital heart defects in children are significant, he said.
