Police request principals to keep students in check

Senior police chiefs in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts have informed school heads not to allow their students to behave indecently at playgrounds and on streets after participating in sports meets or other events.

About 238 students were arrested last year for misbehaving on roads after sports events in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts. Some students were under the influence of liquor and narcotics, Kurunegala Education Director W.M. Balasooriya said.

He was speaking at a meeting of school heads of the Kurunegala district which was held yesterday, at Bingiriya Youth Training Centre in Kurunegala.

So far this year, about 13 students were arrested and later released with warnings. During last year, about 56 students had been arrested over drug and liquor-related offences, Balasooriya added.

President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered the police to crack down on errant liquor manufacturers and dealers in order to put an end to this issue.

Accordingly, 1,267 police personnel have been deployed by the Police Department to arrest such criminals who are active in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts, he added.

A senior police officer in Kurunegala told the Daily News yesterday, that all school canteens and groceries in and around the Kurunegala District would be raided as these places have been reported to sell narcotics to students.
