‘O/L candidates should apply for NICs by March 31’

School heads of the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts have been informed by the Department of Registration of Persons in a circular, that G.C.E.(O.L.) candidates should apply for National Identity Cards by March 31.

School students who are 15 years of age can apply for their National Identity Cards (NICs) through their respective school heads. In the circular, school heads were advised not to wait until the last moment to get NICs for students as students and parents would be inconvenienced due to the lapses on the part of the school authorities.

About 734 complaints against irresponsible school heads were received last year on this matter and hence, school heads have to give their priority this year for this purpose, the department said.

The department said it would not hold mobile service programmes countrywide this year to provide NICs to students and parents, and that students, too, should understand their responsibility in obtaining their NICs in advance, to avoid possible obstacles that would erupt at the examination centres when they have to establish their identity.
